# Turn on checkout and payments

In-app checkout lets shoppers buy from you directly. Shoppers add to bag on your Shopify storefront, then pay on your Brandclub checkout. Your Brandclub checkout handles payment, tax, and the order. Your Shopify checkout is not used.

When checkout is off, shoppers see **Where to buy** links that send them to retailers' own sites.

  B -->|Connect payments| C["Done"]
  B -->|Set up fulfillment| D["Done"]

  D --> E
```
*Checkout reaches shoppers only when both required steps show Done. Until then, shoppers still see Where to buy links.*
## Before you start
* Your [Shopify store is connected](/selling-and-checkout/shopify-integration.md) and your catalog has products.
* You know who will ship your orders: Amazon MCF, or your Shopify store's own 3PL. See [Amazon MCF](/fulfillment/amazon-mcf.md).
## Step 1: Turn on in-app checkout
One switch in **Settings → Checkout** turns on checkout and sets up what it needs.
{% stepper %}
{% step %}
### Open the Checkout settings
Open **Settings → Checkout**. The **Overview** tab opens.
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
### Turn on the switch
Under **Checkout for shoppers**, turn on **In-app checkout**. The **Turn on in-app checkout?** dialog opens.
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
### Confirm
Read the dialog, and click **Turn on checkout**.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
![Settings → Checkout → Overview with checkout live](https://489913050-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FblcXcPwOUg5osGsERflQ%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c72fafb0ce1ff232da8866f4a6253bd1a98998f0%2Fsettings-checkout.jpg?alt=media)
When you turn checkout on, ShopperOS does these things for you:
* Sets up a sales channel for your store.
* Sets up ShopperOS payments, if you have no payment account yet.
* Removes your own store from your **Where to buy** links, so shoppers buy from you instead.
Next, finish the required steps.
## Step 2: Finish the required steps
Checkout goes live only when every required step is done. Under the status heading, each required step shows Done or Not set up. Click **Set up** or **Edit** to open it.
| Step                   | What it needs                                     | Page                                     |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- |
| **Connect payments**   | A payment account.                                | [Payments](#payments)                    |
| **Set up fulfillment** | Amazon MCF, or orders sent to your Shopify store. | [Amazon MCF](/fulfillment/amazon-mcf.md) |
When every step is **Done**, the heading reads **In-app checkout is live**. Until then it reads **In-app checkout isn't live yet**, and shoppers still see **Where to buy** links.
## Step 3: Choose what shoppers call the bag
Under **What shoppers call the bag**, click **Bag**, **Cart**, **Basket**, or **Trolley**. Your choice saves when you click.
Shoppers see this word on buttons and pages, such as **Add to bag**. Button text that you set in your theme still takes priority.
## Payments
**Settings → Payments** shows how card payments are processed for orders placed in your app.
![Settings → Payments](https://489913050-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FblcXcPwOUg5osGsERflQ%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-926cdd5031d02c2f8840a02ca6a122b7f996140b%2Fsettings-payments.jpg?alt=media)
| Option                      | How it works                                                                                                                                                                 |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **ShopperOS payments**      | We process cards on our platform Stripe account and settle to your payout method. You do not need a Stripe account. This is the default when you turn on checkout.           |
| **Your own Stripe account** | Funds land in your own Stripe account. Your Stripe account must already be able to accept charges. The page then also shows the card processing fee withheld on each charge. |
{% hint style="warning" %}
**Stackline team step.** Only your Stackline team can change the payment account. To use your own Stripe account, send your Stackline contact two things: your Stripe account ID (it starts with `acct_`) and the account owner's email. They verify both against Stripe and switch the account for you.
If you switch after you have orders, payouts are affected. Agree on the timing with your Stackline team first.
{% endhint %}
### Statement descriptor
**Statement descriptor** is the name shoppers see on their card statement. Your Stackline team sets it with your payment account.
* It can be up to 11 characters.
* It can use letters, numbers, spaces, hyphens, and dots.
* It must have at least one letter.
## Product-level checkout
Each product has its own checkout details. To see them, open **Catalog**, and click a product. Then click **Checkout** in the product menu.
![A product's Checkout tab](https://489913050-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FblcXcPwOUg5osGsERflQ%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-20c286f37628e1ba38070ee47b447bdcb459e104%2Fproduct-checkout.jpg?alt=media)
| Tab                  | What it shows                                                                                                                                    |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Where-to-Buy**     | Whether retailer links show for this product. **Link out** shows retailer links when this product cannot be bought in your app.                  |
| **Checkout**         | Whether the product can be bought in your app (**Checkout eligible status**), where its price comes from, and its fulfillment link (seller SKU). |
| **Prices**           | The product's checkout price.                                                                                                                    |
| **Subscribe & Save** | The product's subscription offer. See [Subscribe & Save](/selling-and-checkout/subscribe-and-save.md).                                           |
**Checkout eligible status** can be one of these values:
* Eligible
* Partially eligible
* Not eligible
* Disabled
* No checkout retailers configured
A product with no fulfillment link cannot be bought. See [Listings and inventory](/fulfillment/listings-and-inventory.md).
## Link out when checkout cannot complete
**Settings → Where to buy → Link out** helps a shopper who cannot check out. It shows a **View** button with other retailers' offers.
* It is off by default.
* It works only while checkout is on.
* A product's own **Link out** setting takes priority.
## Tax and discount codes need no setup in Checkout
You set up neither of these in Checkout.
* **Tax** is calculated for each shipping address at checkout. There is nothing to set up.
* **Discount codes** come from your campaigns in **Growth**. They are not set in Checkout.
## Check that checkout works
Do these checks after both required steps show **Done**.
{% hint style="danger" %}
There is no test mode. Every order charges a real card. Do not place a test order before you talk to your Stackline team. They can then cancel and refund it for you.
{% endhint %}
{% stepper %}
{% step %}
### Check the status
In **Settings → Checkout**, confirm the heading reads **In-app checkout is live**, and both steps show **Done**.
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
### Add a product to the bag
On your store, open a product page, and click **Add to bag**.
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
### Check the checkout
Confirm the bag and checkout open on your Brandclub checkout.
{% endstep %}
{% step %}
### Find the order
After an order is placed, open **Commerce → Orders** to see it.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}
Done. Shoppers can now buy in your app. Next, set up [Subscribe & Save](/selling-and-checkout/subscribe-and-save.md), or read [Orders](/selling-and-checkout/orders.md).
## Orders in Commerce
**Commerce → Orders** lists every order placed in your checkout, newest first.
* **Source** filter: **All**, **One-time**, or **Subscription**.
* **Payment** status: **No payment**, **Open**, **Charged**, **Partially refunded**, **Refunded**, or **Voided**.
* **Status**: **Placed** or **Cancelled**.
Click an order to see its items, totals (subtotal, shipping, tax, and total), payment, and the related order IDs. If the order was also created in Shopify, **Open in Shopify** opens it there. See [Orders](/selling-and-checkout/orders.md).
## Troubleshooting
Find the message you see, then do the action in its row.
| Message                                                                                       | What to do                                                                                                |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Connect a sales channel on the Catalog tab before enabling checkout.**                      | Connect your store first. See [Connect your Shopify store](/selling-and-checkout/shopify-integration.md). |
| **Your primary sales channel is not ready yet — finish catalog setup, then enable checkout.** | Wait for the catalog import to finish, then try again.                                                    |
| **Only superusers can change this.** (on Payments)                                            | Ask your Stackline team to make the change.                                                               |
| **Enable in-app checkout before turning on Link out.**                                        | Turn on checkout first.                                                                                   |
## What if…?
<details>
What if I turn checkout off?
You can turn checkout off at any time. Your store then goes back into your **Where to buy** links.
</details>
<details>
What if tax cannot be calculated for an address?
The order is not placed, and the shopper is not charged.
